Suma Janecek Blog 1 The Hunger Games

I am reading a book called The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins. I was about a third of the way through. The book is about a sixteen year old girl named Katniss who lives in the nation of Panem, formally known as North America. She lives in district 12, one of the poorest. Every year the Capitol hosts an event called the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is when two tributes, a boy and a girl, from all twelve districts fight to the death so there can only be one winner. She and her twelve year old sister sign in to be apart of the drawing to see who gets picked to be in the games. When its time for the names to be drawn, Prim gets chosen to be the female tribute. Katniss bravely steps up and takes the place of her sister. The boy tribute is Peeta Mellark. Both Peeta and Katniss have a mentor named Haymitch who get sent to the Capitol to practice fighting and come face to face with who they're fighting against. Each tribute gets interviewed by a guy named Caesar. Katniss tells everyone her story about taking the place of her sister while winning the hearts of everyone in the Capitol. Peeta wins the hearts by making everyone laugh but then admitting he has feelings for Katniss. Now everyone is suspicious to see what will happen between Peeta and Katniss in the games.
I think the book is really good because they're a lot of interesting things that happen and it keeps you reading. Something good will happen and then once you think it can't get any better it does. I think the author thought it would be a good future book because it tells the future of North America and how bad everything has gotten. How almost everyone is working and they barely have anything to eat. The theme in this book is courageous, friendship, responsibility, and loyalty. Taking the place of her little sister took a lot of courage especially with how violent the games are and how you're more than likely going to die.
I think Katniss is the best character so far. I really like how brave she is especially knowing that taking the place of her sister she was probably going to die. I think Katniss has really grown as a character because at the beginning she didn't care how she came off to the Capitol. Now she really thinks and tries to come off as a nice and  innocent girl because that could possibly save her life.
"Well there is this one girl. I've had a crush on her ever since I remember. I don't think it's going to work out. Winning won't help in my case, because she came here with me." This quote is important because it really sets up the relationship between Peeta and Katniss.
One question I've had is: How did North America turn into Panem and how did everything get so bad?
